You can check mouse DPI online with a ruler: set a known physical distance, move the mouse along that distance, and compare repeated readings. This method needs no mouse software, but it produces a browser-based DPI estimate rather than a certified sensor measurement.

1. How a Browser Mouse DPI Test Works

Unlike screen-bound tools that stop tracking when the cursor hits a display edge, the Pointer Lock API lets the page receive relative movement while locked. Those values are browser-reported movement units, not a guarantee of unmodified sensor output.

A mouse DPI test compares that relative movement with a measured physical distance. It is useful for checking whether your setup is repeatable and for comparing one setup with another, but it is not a certified hardware specification.

Set the distance with a physical ruler. Keep the mouse flat and use the same edge at the start and end marks.
  1. Configure the target distance: Open the mouse DPI test and choose a benchmark distance such as 5 inches or 10 cm.

Follow a straight physical path. Diagonal movement and inconsistent start or stop points make repeated readings harder to compare.
Why physical distance matters more than screen movement:
A mouse setting commonly called DPI describes sensitivity over physical desk movement, not a screen distance. This browser test normalizes relative movement with your ruler; do not use an on-screen count as the stop marker.

If your estimate changes noticeably when swiping quickly versus slowly, pointer settings or technique may be affecting the result. These steps make comparisons more consistent; they do not prove that the browser received raw sensor data.
