Mouse DPI Deviation: Why Browser Tests Differ

Learn why a browser DPI estimate can differ from your configured mouse DPI, how to calculate the difference, and when to adjust sensitivity.

Mouse DPI deviation is the difference between a browser-based DPI estimate and the DPI configured in your mouse software. It can help you spot a repeatable difference in your own setup, but it cannot prove that a mouse sensor is inaccurate.

1. What Is Mouse DPI Deviation?

For example, a mouse configured at 800 DPI might produce repeated browser estimates around 824 (+3.0%) or 782 (−2.25%). That percentage describes your test result relative to the configured setting. Browser movement units, start and stop position, operating-system input behavior, and physical technique can all contribute to the difference.

A browser estimate can differ from the configured setting. The difference alone does not prove that the mouse sensor is defective.

2. Why a reading can differ

A small error at either ruler mark has a larger effect on a short test, so use a longer distance when desk space allows.

Diagonal movement, lift-off, surface changes, and inconsistent pressure can make repeated runs differ.

Browser and OS Input

Standard Pointer Lock reports relative movement, but browser and operating-system behavior can still affect the units. Compare results in the same browser and system environment.

3. Should You Adjust In-Game Sensitivity?

Usually, do not change sensitivity after one browser test. Consider a recalculation only when repeated, like-for-like runs show a stable difference and your goal is to preserve the same physical turn distance in the same game.

Target Sens = (Reference DPI × Reference Game Sens) ÷ Repeatable DPI Estimate

For example, if a controlled reference setup uses 800 DPI with CS2 sens 1.0, and repeated checks for a new setup center around 840:

Adjusted CS2 Sens = (800 × 1.0) ÷ 840 = 0.952

4. Is a Browser DPI Estimate Proof That a Mouse Is Inaccurate?

No. A browser estimate is useful when it repeats under the same ruler distance, surface, direction, browser, and pointer settings. 5. CPI vs. DPI for Gaming Mice

Mouse manufacturers and players commonly say DPI; CPI is a more literal term for counts per inch. On this site, DPI is used because it matches the wording most players search for. In either case, compare a browser result with the configured value only within the limits of the test method.

Consistency vs. Nominal Accuracy:
A repeated, consistent setup is more useful than over-interpreting one percentage. Compare like-for-like runs, use the median, and record the conditions.
